RIBEX 2002
RIBEX is a show purely for RIBs. The show is held in May every year in
Ocean Village, Southampton and has every type of RIB imaginable, from
pleasure RIB’s, to rescue RIB’s, the new ‘go kart’ Zap Cat RIB’s and
anything else you can think of including one with a steel hull! Scorpion
boats had their new ‘pleasure’ boat on display, although a nice boat they
were asking £150,000 for it…I think I’d prefer several race RIBs or a
Sunseeker at that point, but it also drew attention.
There must have been some 100 boats being exhibited and a lot of these were
on water. Many of the boats were displayed in demonstrations which included
some ZapCats ‘play’ racing, and life boat demonstrations. Just a really good
day out.
A lot of interest was shown in our RIB which was on display for the first
time. Due mainly to it being the first of its kind and secondly the fact
that we are running with the new green Mercury 200XS engines supplied by
Barras. So a lot of interest was shown amongst journalists from all over
Europe, fellow racers and the public.
One of the high points for us started the day before when 4 boats from the
Mark Pascoe stable including ours, did a photoshoot on Southampton Water
even though it was blowing a Force 4/5. We had put the poor photographer on
one of the ferries and spent half an hour buzzing the ferry whilst he took
some photos in rough sea. It was quite amusing asking 4 race drivers to run
alongside each other and not to race…there were times when you just couldn’t
help yourself!
So Ribex was a great event for everyone, we got a lot of PR and whilst all
this was going, we managed to sneak off for some more testing…well did you
expect anything else!
